Sunset in Longmont, Colorado

“Sunset” is a dynamic, artistic expression of a red-tailed hawk carrying a fish while flying toward the future.

Red-Tailed Hawk: The spirit of freedom and abundance can be seen in its flight. This sculpture

Symbolically ties together the concepts of earth, sky, and water, and represents our connection to all of nature here in Colorado.

Fish: throughout history, fish from the water is seen as a life-giver, thus a symbol of continuous abundance.

Bronze: “Sundown” will be cast in the timeless material of bronze, and will remain for thousands of years.

Stone: The monolithic stone will stand over 8’ tall and will hold the bronze hawk aloft so that it will be able to command the site and be seen from a distance. It will be locally quarried and represents our connection to the Earth and the Past. The hawk’s shadow created by the sunset will be sculpted into the surface of the stone itself.

Spirals:  One of the oldest geometric shapes found throughout the ancient world is spirals. Petroglyphs of spirals date back to around the Neolithic period. Yet, ancient cultures throughout the world carved the same symbol with little or no communication with each other.  The Spiral is a sacred symbol that represents the journey and change of life as it unfolds; taking a labyrinth-like passage that leads to Source.

Handprints:  Also representing our connection to the past and to each other, these handprints will send a message of humanity for people to wonder about in times to come.

As people pass by “Sunset” they may place their hands in the stone handprints and think about their own journey through life as they soar toward their own futures.
