Morning Flight, Benson Sculpture Garden, Loveland, CO
Morning Flight is a stylized bronze hawk, casting its shadow on a rock as it passes, flying towards a rabbit, evidenced only by its escaping shadow.
In different ways, this sculpture not only celebrates a dynamic moment in time but the endless other cycles found in nature and is symbolic of the state of all living things through the ages, including ourselves.
"The story of the hawk pursuing the rabbit has been known forever. Much of the time in life, it can be said that we, like both the hawk and rabbit, are either flying towards something we might wish for or flying away from something we’d like to avoid." Relates artist, Adam Schultz, "Most of the time, I feel like I’m flying in both capacities at once."
The spiral petroglyphs that Adam carved into the back of the stone reflect spirals he has seen left by other ancient cultures on similar stones. He's learned that, among other things, they are a message from the past about the idea of taking a journey. He continues this spiral motif in the wings of the soaring red-tailed hawk as well.
